Ok, I'm lazy and like stuff to be fully automated.

SO I figure there has to be some form of a natural nitrate removal.

I was reading that Shaving Brush Plant reduce them and I was hoping Maiden's Hair Plant does too. I was thinking about adding in 1 or 2 mangroves in my refugium.

Do all plants help remove nitrates? If they are, are they just not effective enough to help handle the amount of nitrates produced in the tank?

Natural Nitrate remover? Build a de-nitrating coil. Most natural way I know :)

John he has a space in the sump he is making that he wants to do a refugium in.. although the coil could be cool.

crutkas, why not caulerpa? It's more of a sponge than Mangroves..

Most of what I know on this stuff I put here, fyi:

There's also posts at the bottom of that page by other people sharing their experiences...

I think I'm going to make a little denitrifier just to play with. I have found several good plans and they seem to be a tiny natural filter/aquarium in a plastic container, albeit a drip system, but I am sure after 6 months or so it will be quite effective. Any little haven for those nice little bacteria to call a home can't hurt!!! ;D

I'll post some pics when I get going on it!! (I finally got a digital camera that takes pretty decent pictures...so you don't have to look at them going..."What is that??")  :D

I understand that Cheato is suppose to be one of the best to use. I got it for my fuge since my numbers are so high. My fuge is only a 5 gl so I'm not sure how much help it is but its packed full. I just did a 35-40 gl water change yesterday. My nitrates were down to 25 rather than 80 so something is helping. They say that Cheato is less likely to go sexual and mess up your tank.

I like the idea of a denitrifying coil.

    Good luck!

I'll get you a pic of some. Some people also call it brillo pad because that's kind of what it looks like.

    Nitrate coil?

If there is some other way than a water change to lower them and not natural, do tell.
