Most likely alk swing, like Kevin suggested.

Also, calibrate your refractometer with 35ppt solution, not RO water.

    Never used GFO, yet anyways

I hope it is new growth, but it has certainly grown, and has never done this before

When I typed calc, I meant Alk. Which has remained stable.

I no longer do it this way.
I now drip in a fairly weak Kalk / vinegar soution with an IV dripper over at least 3-4 hrs. for 1 gallon of weak Kalk in RO/DI.

No Controller for me. I put Kalc in the top off about a year ago, clogged the ATO system some, so aborted that long ago, and now drip it in very weak and slow.

I don't objectively think it was an Alk swing.
I plan on calibrating my refractometer soon, maybe today against others/35ppt.

Thanks to you all for trying to help with this.

Word of warning on refractometers is, calibrate them every time. I used mine and the next day it was off by 3-4 points. Which is a big deal. With as easy as they are to calibrate, It's best to do it every time, IMO.

I hope this comes back for you, I have no experience on this here, so I am useless...

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
That is some pretty serious tissue loss, sorry. Frag what you can because I do not think that piece will make it. Todd can you list products that you use on the tank by brand name, for instance IO salt, kent Kalk....Include charcoal, chemipure. I am sure it seems tedious that we always ask for the same information, but the information in not easily found buried within tank threads.

As frustrating as it is sometimes there is no explanation for sps casualties, but your pieces are older established colonies which leads me to believe it's something you will eventually figure out. These are hardy sps as well.

    Any recent introductions?

Thanks Matt, I hope I figure it out too!

Salt- has been Kent for months.
Mrs. Wards Pickling LIme- and not that much of it now that I'm using Kent salt.
Deep Blue Charcoal- not that much, not that often
    PHos guard- same as GAC

That's pretty much it. NOthing else.
    No recent additions either.

This did start happening before I changed out my return pump also.

And thanks Mindy also, I hope I get it figured out too.

PS- one layer of my Neon Orange Monti is also now showing a few spots of tissue loss. :-(

I'd suggest testing and double checking everything. First, calibrate your refractometer. If its off, all of the others values are off as well.

What level has your alk been at? What test kit do you use, and how often do you test?

You have everything going good for a while. Something changed, you just don't know what it is. Yet.

    Right Jerry,
Checked my Alk again yesterday, it was 8. API
I check it about weekly/10 days. Seems to stay steady.

I'm trying to calibrate it tonight

MOre tissue loss on the valydia this morning, and now my green acro/green slimer is showing some loss as well.
After church I'm going to hack all the bad areas off.

I'm also going to try raising my ALK some,
and I'm doing some more water changes!

Pray for my corals! - Most all are doing fine, but this is freaking me out!

hope your corals pick back up. have you considered doing a coral dip with coral Rx? if your alk and ph are good then all I can think of is bacterial infection or rapid change of flow. I torched a acro with my powerhead by accident.
