Tangster, you are wrong! At some point, you may have missed the QT step(s), it sounds like, big mistake. Dr. Burgess (chief scientist on the topic) recorded that in the cyst stage, he found the longest existing cyst to last for 60 days before releasing the free-swimming parasites. Therefore, if you did not keep your display tank fallow (free of fish) for this long, then ick probably always resided in your tank. I have fought many battles myself and finally won using Seachem Cupramine (note on water changes as the original poster said RE: ammonia/nitrates during copper treatment; Hypo-Salinity did not work even though my QT tank was held for weeks at 1.09, before adding them back to the display). DT fallow & treatment in QT for 6 weeks (w/ copper). At the right doses using cupramine these parasites will ALWAYS die. In your case your fish likely built up an immunity, if not temporary, which usually happens after one year. Then one day, got stressed & lost that immunity, because as you say, your fish once again became infected.Ick. Which likely did always reside in your tank, as you apparently did not follow the proper quarantine procedures.

PS Everything that can be know about Cryptocaryon irritans is now known.
