    Actually, yes; back in the early days before we had ammonia test kits, we went by smell to determine if coral heads were safe for use as deco in our FO tanks. If you smelled rotting tissue, you cured the skeleton in a bucket until the odor disappeared. That would definitely work for determining if your coral is dead. Thanks for bringing back decades-old memories. :D
