Looks like hundreds of rocks stacked on top of each other to me. the "rocks" are not just regular rocks. They are corals that have died and new corals have grown on top and died followed by more corals growing on top and so on and so forth. So actually yes you do see hundreds even thousands of "rocks" stacked on top of each other.

Once you have corals growing it would look very natural.

 

+1. While its just my opinion, the rock wall tanks look much less natural. It only mimics one part of the reef (where the reef ends), where with just stacking you get a much broader range of habitat.
