With all the posts recently about the "wrong kind" of algae. I just wanted to know what this stuff is that is all over my glass and getting on my rock. I had a few pieces of live rock for a while and added about 10 lbs of base rock a few days ago. I noticed some of this algae before the addition, but after it has really taken off. Pics included. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Did I start another cycle when I added the rock? How do I get rid of it?

When you can see the brown dusting the algea is dead it will pass normal part of the cycle for the fisrt 30 days or so once all the food is gone they are done also. and the brown is their dead little bodies .

Adding LR doesnt do that, not finished with cycle usually does thou. Sounds like the ending of a cycle. How long has the tank been running? Luna

It comes off the glass easily using a MagnaFloat (you don't have to get your hands wet) or similar scrubber. I have it now and then on the back glass of the tank, since I don't clean it off as often as the front and sides. Snails will go at it eventually, and it will come and go. The only way to never have it is to stop feeding it - cut back light, phosphates and extra nitrate wastes from overfeeding, etc.

Tank has been up for probably close to 3 months. I Think I had this once before at about the 4-5 week mark, thats when I bought a few snails and hermits and they ate it ( or it died) and it's been under control since. I guess its just coincidental that I added the base rock around the time the algae appeared. Oh, I also ugraded light about a week before. That probably did not help. any starfish that eat this stuff? That would be great. but probably not true, and probably souldnt be adding stuff if I'm still cycling.
How do you guys have so much patience?:-/

i added a single piece of rock at one point that caused my whole tank to become an algae forest, i watched it spread from that rock outward. it was medium size piece of florida rock, it mast have been soaked in nutrients.LOL ill never buy florida rock again. it took about a month of dusting it off every night till it cleared up. should have proly took it out, but i learned. florida rock seems that it takes alot longer to cure than indo. i add more rock often, but i now only add base indo rock, yes very stripped of coraline, but also clean.coraline will grow back. not sure if any of this helps i started to ramble. but yes it could be the rock, unlikely if its base.dust it off with a baster and see if a lot of debris comes off of it. maybe even dust off all the rocks. when debris accumulates on the rocks that can feed algae. if your tank is new less than 2 months than its a waiting game.
