I have a 40 gal reef with 175 watt MH lighting.  The bulb is 10K and is hung in a pendant fixture.  Is this going to be enought for my corals to grow or do I need something bluer in spectrum, such as VHO in addition?  I don't really want to spend the money for it now, but I'm worried the corals I buy will not do well in the tank...

I would say no. You should be fine with a 10K bulb.
I run 2x6500K and 2x Actinics it would be the equivalent of what your running
