Well I guess send it back. It appears that you can not buy covers.

 

this is getting stranger... I can find some pictures on the internet with the "no coating" version, the ebayer even sent me a youtube video with an installation guide and there is no coating, nothing is mentioned on bulkreefsupply or a couple other sellers. Seems like this would be a pretty important issue to address. Anyway thanks coralline, helpful as always.

 

Wrap it with Saran wrap and use a very tight rubber band to seal the top. Clean it frequently. That's my only suggestion.

lol, ok so we contacted nova tec and they informed us the white coating was discontinued due to a cracking problem, the aluminum is anodized to navy spec and safe for salt water. that would explain why no mention of the coating is made on any of the websites selling the ice probe, so it looks like a false alarm. thanks for the quick responses.
