    I will say this. If you want to use a 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch sand bed, it's your tank do what you want with it. I've seen BB tanks, tanks with crushed coral, tanks with deep sand beds, and tanks with shallow sand beds. This is something that is entirely up to you. If you want to do a real shallow sand bed and it fits what you want, then do it. That way you will be happy with the look and just be careful with your cleaning and you won't scratch your tank. Your live rock can scratch it, sand can scratch it, and urchins can scratch it for example but these are all things you will just have to watch and be careful with and you will enjoy yourself and your tank.     no sand sifter fish then. personally I love my diamond goby.

    Unless you have a regular cleaning plan, waste is going to fester under it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, just that you should make sure to have a regular and effective plan for keeping it detritus free.

    I think you should just keep a thin decorative layer of sand syphoned every now and then, with a sand sifting fish or two.. Not the end of the world.

    I've seen tanks that just have zoa frags on the bottom.
