If I am running a really good skimmer that is doing a great job, how much mechanical filtration is needed?
I have a sponge in my overflow skimmer, then I have a sponge that the skimmer drops water through after it skims.. Then in the sump I have another rectangle sponge sitting across the bottom as water goes through it before it goes back up the Mag 7 return..
    Do I have enough?

I don't use mechanical filtration but as long as they are cleaned regularly(like every day lol) it sounds like enough to me.

OK. So even in my overflow box I really don't need to have a coarse sponge filter?

I don't get to the rectangle one enough across the bottom.. maybe I should remove just that one. I put it in there more to stop micro bubbles

How big is your tank? I prefer socks to collect all the junk before my skimmer and keeps water crystal clear but like all mechanical filters you have to stay diligent on maintenance. I do weekly water changes and sock changes so I never have a problem

I don't use any mechanical filtration. You want to feed your tank on a continuous basis. I feed zooplankton and phytoplankton. A sock or foam filter will just collect it to rot.

^^Add food to the tank..Fish food works wonders...Get enough waste out and find the balance/bioload of your system.Do not overstock or you/your animals will eventually pay the price unless a strict maintenance schedule can be adhered too.
