How much do you want to put in it?

The old 1 to 1.5 pounds per gallon rule was created when live rock was dense, heavy, and less effective; however, to this day, fish-only tanks without live rock still exist, and large reefs are built on minimal rockwork. You must decide what type of structure you want and what size, then buy enough rock to build it. :)
