E-Shopps PF-300. I have it and it has worked flawlessly for over 2 years now. You may think it costs too much, but let me tell ya:
If that homemade overflow ever screws up, you could have $100s, if not $1000s, of dollars worth of damage to your home.

Is there a plug on the overflow box? As in, are you plugging it in like you would a HOB filter/skimmer/powerfilter?

if you plug it in to start it, then unplug it. does it still work assuming the water level in the tank is high enough?

Only plug it in to start it, then unplug it. That is what's making it hard to balance the level in the sump with the level in the DT.
