    Virus-Stricken Shrimp Concerns Hawaii

LIHUE, Hawaii - Despite measures taken to quarantine a virus at a Kauai shrimp farm, the disease could spread to native crustaceans and ultimately harm the reef ecosystem, state officials said.

The virus is highly contagious and fatal to sea life, but poses no threat to humans, even if infected shrimp are eaten, the state said.

Unfortunate that an aquaculture operation is in this situation.

Wow. That's awful. I seem to remember something similar with some salmon farms. Hope they figure out. Some guy in that article claims their efforts are like 'putting lip stick on a corpse!' NOT GOOD.

The really "SCARY" thing about this "virus" --- is that does not appear "species" specific...

(oh, and another,...the implication from article, that somehow it not affecting humans makes it somehow less of a "major crisis" !!! (was my impression anyway - >:( ) )
