You are doing the right thing by asking for help! I know what these tanks mean to all of us and how much money and work goes in. Just let me know and I am on my way. Do you know how to private message?? If so pm me your phone number for directions.

Hey Rob, if your going over, check the intake of that bio-wheel filter. It just may be that it has something clogging it.

No prob...I am real familiar with them, I have them on all my 5 FW tanks. It looks like he has an Emporor 400 or Penguin 350

looking INSIDE the thing that makes the noise

two "tubes" are in this one... one under the water line and one right at the waters edge... it seems as though sound is coming from this thing.

view from the other side seems the water is a tad low (notice the black marker marks)

Looks like the water level is low---Does he run an auto-top off?? Maybe it has failed. These tanks can go through alot of water. Is there a tank under the main tank??? Is it low, or about 1/2 way full?

    Yeah, thats the skimmer.
Take a cup, and pour a little water in the rightmost chamber. Let me know if the noise goes away even temporarily after you do that.

If what I am seeing is a hang on the back skimmer, tjhen the water is definately low. We need to check the top-off system.

If he left any Top-off water, fill it up to the line he left and see if that stops the noise. If not, I think that its a good idea if Rob goes over to help you. I dont know if your comfortable with that, but its a suggestion.
