    are 2 100 watt heaters better than 1 150 or 200watt.

You still would be better off having 2 heaters in your tank. If one heater goes out then the other will be there in case it needs to kick on. I only have one heater right now but when the weather starts getting cooler then I will put in the other. I don't know what wattage mine is, its what the previous owner of the tank gave me. My tank stays between 80-82 without a heater on. I'm thinking that I may need to invest in a chiller for these Texas hot summer days, especially if the AC goes out.

No you need to set them both for the same temp.
Wattage has nothing to do with how hot the water will get but how fast it will get to temp.
For example if you have a 200 watt heater in say a 75 gallon tank will be more able to keep the temp at 80 with less variation in temp than a 100 watt would. The 100 watt would be on longer and it would take it longer to heat the water, So if you have a big temp drop in your house a 100 watt heater would be on longer and may not be able to keep your tank up to temp. so if you have 2 100watt heaters it is still like having a 200watt except if one dies on you still have the other working to keep your temp up.
If you Have a 100 watt heater set for 80 and a 200 watt heater set to 80 the water will only heat up to 80.
But the 200 will be able to keep it there with less fluctuation in temp ;) :D ;D..................... John

    John,

A lot of people over here use 2 heaters. Using your example, they would have one heater set at 80 and one set at 75. This means that the second heater would only come on if the temperature fluctuation was unusual.
