I have checked my water parametes and all are inline. I bought a Purple Tang about a month ago, quarantined him and added him to my tank. Two weeks later he developed popeye. I boucht Melafix and added to the tank per the directions and 2 days later the popeye went away.

About a week ago I noticed that his tail fin had what appeared to be nips or peices missing out of it. Althought I havent seen any agression from any of the other fish, I assumed that it was fighting. Well yesterday i noticed that he had died when i woke up that morning.

After his death i look at the other fish in the tank and noticed that my Naso had similar nips fron his tail. Now he is acting as if he is on the way out laying on the sand and not moving adn he was always one of my most active fish.

It is now painfully obviouis that I have some sort of diease in the tank.....my question is what is it and how do I keep any other fish from dying? Any help would be appreciated. I cant tank any photos because the fish will not come out.

    Again, H2O parems are great.

Purple Tangs as well as Naso Tangs, are quite hardy. I've housed a Purple Tang in my 92 well over a year now, and I'd have to starve the fish for him to die. Are you sure the damage that was seen to the tail wasn't fin rot?

I would think that if you added melafix to your tank it killed bacteria in the tank. You may be going through another cycle.

Im not sure if it was fin rot or not as I am not familiar with the disease. I will google to find out but if it is how do I cure it or can I? The water parems doesnt point to another cycle so Im not sure.

Actually, no- Melafix is reef safe and does not harm the bio filter.

I'd say they beat the crap outta each other, and the Naso got beat up just as bad. Do your other fish look as if they are in distress? Not for nothing here, but once the stress due to fighting starts, its imparative you remove one of the fighting fish from the tank, the stress on each one takes its toll, quickly.

I have never seen them fight or be agressive towards each other. I was just assuming that what the nip were and so far none of the other fish seem affected.

I'd say this is quite unlikely. Naso Tangs in general, are quite timid fish. Considered "community fish" by aquarists. The Purple Tang can be quite aggressive and territorial with additions after he's established, but his Naso has been in the tank for quite some time.

How many fish are in your aquarium and what was the size?
