I bought a small frag of birdsnest a few weeks ago.
Its been growing very well, however the base of the frag was white and dead and has since provided a spot for some hair algae to start growing on it.

my concern is that i looks like the hair algae is starting to slowly over take the birdsnest.
How should i go about removing it without damaging my coral?

Ditto with what diver 1298 said! I always use a soft bristle toothbrush on my corals and live rock.

Let us know how you make out!!!It should work for you. You might want to increase the water movement to your birdsnest, as well, to cut down on the algae problem.

just brushed off most of the algae; there are some spots in between elbows of the frag that i couldn't get completely clean.

I've moved the birdsnest closer a powerhead to try and keep the algae back.
it's only been about 15 min and 75% of the polyps are back out and appear happy.

I had and have hair algae on my birdnest. Keep the nitrate and phosphates low and the coral will kill the algae on it own. As far as getting the algae in between the branches. You can get some rigid and flexible airline and make a tiny little siphon to suck as much of the algea out of the base. The good news is in my experience the birdnest are alot more resistant to being overgrown than Acro or Monti are.
