There are some forms of algae like cheato and other macro algae that hermits and grazers such as Tangs and Angels absolutely LOVE to eat.

The main purpose for growing algae "on purpose" is for a refugium. These give small critters such as pods a place to grow and filter your water, and the algae you have in it soaks up extra nutrients, nitrates, and phosphates, meaning you don't have the icky gunk looking algae in your display tank.

Not all algae is the green hairy stuff or the brown snotty stuff we see growing on our rocks. Some people grow algae in a refugium to feed their fish as well as to filter water.

And the word "seaweed" is normally just a generic term that means "plant that grows in the water." Algae in the ocean can range from small patches of hair algae, to giant forests of kelp.

Here's an example of a sump/refugium. You have the fuge side, with the algae, rock, and sand. And you have the equipment side with the protein skimmer. And no, this picture isn't mine, I got it from google images.
