All depends on your setup. But normally they are a fast spreader

I was going to buy the sm-med sized rock they had at the lfs but it was $35.00 which was a lil steep for what i wanted to pay for G.S.P. so i settled for the small piece that fell off the main rock lol.

under the right conditions they will take over your tank if you don't have the rock with GSP on it isolated.

Once the acclimate and start growing it will take off. look for light purple mats to grow outwards followed by small polyps

they almost always grow fast. i am set up for sps growth and its the fastest growing thing in my tank, by far. If you keep it isolated from the rock work then it typically wont 'take over'. i have mine on the very bottom of my tank on its own small rock.

oh and as far as growth rate, the rock was about the size of your average palm and i got it half covered. in about a month the whole thing was encrusted.
