Gravel Vacuuming!

    I do weekly water changes on my fresh water tanks. @ the same time I use a syphon to remove dirt from the gravel. If I do this, are catfish really necessary ?

    Personally, I always keep a cat in my FW tanks. Good for cleaning up excess food on the bottom of the tank.

    Would a syphon not do the same thing ?

    Yes, and more. Detritus and extra food settle into the gravel. A cat will only remove the food. Vacuuming will remove both. Having a small cat will delay the need to vacuum by having less "stuff" accumulate.
