Goldfish Tank Mates

What other fish can I put with my goldfish? I want to put something else in the tank, but I don't want more goldfish because they get too big. I'd like something that will consume algae and not bother or be eaten by my goldfish. Thanks.

 

What about a pleco? What size tank do you have?

 

Otocinclus maybe? Yoyo loach?

 

Pit bull plecos are awesome especially if you have a small tank. How bout some snails?

 

Common Pleco

 

I wouldn't add a common Pleco. These fish are Omnivores and have a tendency to attack fat bodied fish like Goldfish when they get larger. A Bushynose Pleco or Otocinculus would be much better choices.

 

What about a rubbernose pleco?

 

Personally I would not keep a pleco with goldfish because of the temperatures differences (coldwater vs tropical). You could go with some snails, mine cleared up algae (which was coating almost all of the 10 g walls in the weeks before we had snails) in a couple weeks. Alternatively, you could do a garra rufa, which do well with goldfish and their temperatures.

 

Golden dojo loaches are perfect with goldfish. They are bottom feeders and have the coolest personalities. I've had dojos with my goldfish for 2 an a half years, and they are just the happiest!
