Ok i have had freshwater for over 20yrs.Want to set up a salt tank. One ? i haven't been able to find the answer too.Does the same apply to salt as fresh footprint over gallons? And if lets say a fish that requires a 40gal tank,is that including the water that has been displaced by live rock?Or if the live rock is going to displace 10gallons does that mean the required size would be 50gal?

depends on fish, if you have a normal amount of live rock don't worry about it, of course if you have a 300 gallon tank with 900 pounds of rock, there is no way a cat shark could go in it.

im pretty sure most of go by the actual tank size and not water volume.
but lets be realistic, if you have a 100g jammed with rock you cant put in as many fish.
i think the aquascape on the tank dictates what fish can live comfortably more than water volume.
