don't use rock salt.it has impurities.use salt pellets for a water softener and read label to make sure 1st.i made loads of rock with just portland cement, aragonite and salt pellets.it takes extra long to cure cause the pelets have to dissolve and you have to change the fresh water its cured in more often cause it becomes thick with salt.

Why not go to a landscaping place and ask them if they carry tufa rock? You can get it for like $0.30 a lb. Tufa is petrified corals that are mined. Tufa is also sold in many LFS stores by Feller Stone company as aquarium decor rocks but its a lot more money.

i tried to make a rock.....well a few, i used portland cement type 3, crushed coral.........5 cups cement 25 cups coral 1/5 ratio.....aragonite sand in a tub to "dig" molds into......it failed misserably......i just crushed it all up and threw it back into the next batch to make it more porous.....and it worked....i wound up selling it for 3 bucks a pound
