    You will need something placed on top of the carbon to keep it from moving. If you have carbon moving/being tossed/stirred etc. you will a lot of carbon particles floating around which you dont want.

    If it were me, I would just buy something that I know works, not because I wouldnt be interested in doing something this but due to space under tank and where I live just doesnt seem worth it.
