I've got a definite smell filling my living room. My nitrates/trites are almost 0, it's clean and everything and the smell isn't bad when you smell the tank; actually recently I just rehooked up my sump and had to taste some saltwater getting my overflow going and it was clean; but the smell is funky in the air. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I didn't have much of a problem with my nano (20 gal + 10 sump) but now with a 37 gallon display and 20 gal sump it's an issue (I think the live rock I added is part of it all too.) Thank you so much, I've got about 2 years into the hobby and if I can't fix this problem I'm going to have to break it all down :(

This might sound stupid but it actually works: Automatic spraying airfreshoners. (batterypowered)

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
No my tanks have never smelled. I know some algae that can grow in sumps may have an odor. Any chance water is getting under the tank or anywhere in the stand.

How long ago did you add the new rock?

Dunno, can't tell over the smell of the litterbox! Bwahahahahaha!
Just kidding! Our skimmer smelled for a little while when we were cycling, other than that no.

Don't use spray air fresheners near the tank, though.

Never had any unpleasant smells, even when my rock was cycling.

An airfreshener will destroy your tank if any of the chemicals get pulled into the water via skimmer etc.

I just suggested the spray air freshner (guess it was not a good suggestion). I do not have one in my room, but I was wondering if it is o.k to have one in the adjacent room. It does not seem to be doing any damage at all to my tank, but I just want to be sure. Sorry to coyle for the bad suggestion.

    are you running carbon?
    either 24/7 or periodically?

as that should help with odor problems
but finding the source of the odor, maybe a dead creature under the cabinet

( I had a plecostomus catfish that for some reason decided to vacate its home in a 4ft freshwater tank and the area around that tank did smell terrible I recal until I found the source of the problem using a brush stale slid under cabinet and found the culprit)
