Well i run the my Aqua C ev 180 then it dumps into a micron bag and thats where i have my carbon bout 1 pound.
then tank drain it's self dumps into another large micron filter bag.

I dont' know whether ive got the low down on skimming/filtering here but
i can photo my LR and tank walls and the rock is the deepest purple ive seen thus far and completly covred now.
And the only algea problems i might have is a bit of brown diatome that i easaly brush off bout once week ( very little )
I need to change my bulbs out , the spectrum has changed on the bulbs
    ( waitng on ups )

I have a nano skimmer 6" X 2" dia on my 55g system, I supposed that removes enough
and a air line in to a 1gal jug so I don't have to be slaving empty in it!

I think people are interpreting this question differently, thus the nearly 50/50 results.

It appears some are reading it as "do you use a protein skimmer" as some sort of filter, while others are reading "do you use a filter on your skimmer?"

Huh. Didn't think of that. Can someone verify that is what they did?

I read it as do you use a protein skimmer filter ! Now as dumb as this may sound I have been seeing and hearing of people who are now actually using a prefilter like foam on their skimmer pump intakes... And they so so pre filter the skimmer water then have that passing through a floss and carbon then running that over into and feeding their refugiums . But if I read it wrong and caused any confusion Its Matt's fault :) With his trick questions

I use a protein skimmer But its now used a standalone filtering method .
I don't filter the inlet water I do run the outlet water over and through a filter pad and carbon this is only to off gas any residual Ozone out of the skimmer

I ran a filter on my skimmer outlet in place of the bubble diffuser basket, but only until the skimmer was broken in enough to not make so much microbubbles.
