I really like this idea and i am planning on doing somethign similiar to this. However how do you place the sand in there without causing it to get all dusted up and come out of the filter as well what else do you use in the filter besides the sand/macro algea/pods?

This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm new to the hobby so I have a couple questions.
    - Right now I only have one fish (firefish) in my 55 Gallon. Within a week I'm picking up a small pair of clowns. Will the pod buildup overrun the tank? I haven't had to worry about pods ever since I've always been FW, but does that introduce a bio load?

    - Sand or no sand? Will the pods flourish without sand in the filter?

    - Would a smaller filter, say the one compartment version (the 280), also work? I'm limited on space. I realize it would take a smaller light fixture, but I can deal with that.

    Thanks for the help.

Done. Built mine today. I'll try to upload a couple pics tomorrow... I went a less-DIY route, but same idea. Used a one-compartment penguin power filter by marineland (the 150). Got some cheato and pods in there... Looks great - They had some brand new grow lights (6400K) in and gave me one for a deal to try out... Looks great, and running it on opposite light cycles, the lights looks like moonlight in the DT during the night.

Should have seen the firefish as some of the pods got dumped into the tank from the filter... happiest fish ever! haha. Thanks for a great DIY. I especially like that I was able to accomplish it in less than 24 hours.

I started building one of these like a year ago but I just never have nitrates and my chaeto always just dies off... So I stopped. But I still like the idea.
