I'm not completely clear on what kind of substrate you have in this...

Is it only an inch or so of sand on the two sides?

I have a few months of activated carbon left that will only work in my similar "filter" - (it's what I've been using it for).

As soon as I run out of that and have to buy a new batch, I will switch carbons and convert my filter to this.

    I really like the idea.

How often are you having to trim the chaeto back?

Please keep posting as to your observations on pod counts too. I am a fan of DR Cool's DIY.

checked on the cheto it hasent really grown but all my blur green cyano is gone water is clearer and my pod population is through the roof but there is alot of diutris under the cheto in the filter should i syphon it out i think that and trimming the cheto is going to be the only maintence for this thing

over all i'm happy with the build

I might upgrade my filter from the 280 model i have now to the 400

but it is a good DIY ALL my algae is gone and all my levels are 0 o and as for pods i see alot but my clowns now see them as a food source and when lights come on they go wild by the time lights go out there's only 5-6 (ones big enough for me to see) on the glass and it starts over again the next day
