A couple of thing can happen with the red slime remover that may result in fish deaths:

    1) it can kill the nitrifiers which will lead elevated ammonia and nitrite concentrations which you may not test for because you're not expecting it

    2) it can kill the cyano and a lot of other stuff in the tank resulting in a lot of organic material in the tank which in turn may cause a bloom of bacteria degrading the organics and the bacteria will consume oxygen from the water resulting in your fish suffocating.

    3) all of the above!

curious...does the use of waste away have an affect on the alkalinity?

does the use of eco-balance have an effect on the alkalinity?

The use of Eco-Balance, and more so Waste-Away, can effect alkalinity in a round about way. These bacterial products reduce organics which can produce a little ammonia. That ammonia will be converted to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate and these two processes will result in a reduction of alkalinity.

After cleaning up the tank and getting rid of the cyanobacteria I would add the NP-Active Pearls which will promote the growth of the good bacteria on a continuous basis.
