Will aiming the koralia at the cyano cause it to spread? it's on the substrate, the substrate is caribsea aragonite sand. We syphoned it last night and it's back again today. The lights are new, about a month or so old. i know the nitrates are high, 20ppm.

When the protective covering is broken the cells die .. What you see in the fuzzy red covering with sometime bubbles in it is not the bacteria its it tent :) Cooler temps stress it also warmer water speeds the spread up and as I said it does not like oxygen..

First thing I would ask is, what is your water source, ro/di, tap, bottled? Phosphates are the primary starting point for an outbreak, our test kits usually won't go low enough to give you a true reading and will only test for one type of phosphate, ignore your test kits for now as what your trying to measure is getting locked up in the cyano, as an "algae" it truly is an amazing remover of excess nutrients, so heres a plan. ensure your new water is acceptable by using a well functioning ro/di unit, increase flow, clean your lights or if old replace, water changes, syphon daily, rinse all frozen foods with ro/di as they are loaded with phos and nitrates, use a phosphate removing media(iron based) it will go away with patience and attention, best of luck.
