Looks good. I agree with Tangster, you need to give the algae a rest period and not run it 24/7. Also you might want to invest in a auto top off if you don't have one because your return pump chamber is so small that you will not be able to leave the tank for more then one or two days with evaporation happening. You will see all that water loss in the return pump area.

is an auto topoff system something one can DIY without a RO/DI unit at the moment?

Well, it's finished for now. On my next dive I'm going to grab enough sand from the reef to create a DSB with critters and pods.

I'll keep everyone posted on how it progresses.

By the way, thanks for the compliments and great advice everyone. I'm going to run the light in the fuge when the main tank's light is off.

I bought a daylight spiraled compact flourescent. A 100W equivalent.

As far as the DSB in the fuge, when I put the sand in, that's when I see if this is doable. It might be a sand storm. The chaeto is tumbling like tumbleweed; perhaps a full revolution in 6 seconds or so. I think sand might be relatively undisturbed.

    I'll keep everyone posted.

Turn the fuge lights on about 1 hour before the daytime lights go out so the algae can get active when you shift the photo period.
You can set a auto top off with a 5 gallon bucket and a float for pretty cheap. Just keep an eye on your return chamber when you start the tank.
