depends on the coral.most of the time you just break or cut a piece off trying to avoid direct damage to the polyp

It really depends on the type of coral. Soft, LPS, SPS. What types do you have in your system?

generally hard corals are easier to frag, but with most soft corals there is a way to cut them and minimize damage. you just have to be aware of any fluids they excrete as they can be toxic to the system and you.

Qustion? When you do frag is it best to rinse the frag and the mother colony in tank water to eliminate the toxins that are released??

Yeah, you want to have nearly any coral you frag in a separate container, but it's especially so for known chemical war mongers, like zoanthids and chalices.

As for doing it, it usually amounts to just cutting it, with some special techniques for keeping tissue damage to a minimum.

Frag tanks have it ten times easier too! If you have the money though. Not cheap at all! :)

is it good to buy frags if you plan of having a system for a long time.

and are frags easy to keep??

as far as your first question it is preference, some people like to grow things out and spend less money but some like to get a big colony so it grows faster.

freshly fragged things are often weaker but smaller established frags are usually just as hardy as the bigger colony(in my experience). Its probably better to start with frags so you can get to know the husbandy. If a frag dies its usually less then 40 dollars wasted, with a larger colony it can be hundreds.
