how often should a refugium be cleaned up? I have some live rock and some cheto in mine, but I am getting a lot of what looks like detritus at the bottom and I also have a lot of cyno and GHA growing in it

Well for me, I have never cleaned my sump. I have recently thought of doing so though. I don't use filter socks, so I know my sump is very dirty. My thoughts were to isolate it from the DT. Clean during a water change by siphoning out the dirty water. Leave set for a day then bring it back online. I probably will make a routine of doing this once a year???

And if not a full cleaning , is it better to leave all the "stuff" growing in it like Gha and cyno ?

Also, should I even have the live rock down in there? or is it creating a nitrate factory?

it certainly would make it relatively easy to clean out the excess off the bottom with a bare bottom
