sounds like you didnt rinse it first.

a filter pad may help get the black out of the water, try that and see if it helps. let the pad run for 24hr and it should clear it up.

yeah , i would try to use something like a poly pad . try to find a filter pad that feels more like cotton , it might catch more of the fine particles of dust. Also a water change wouldnt hurt just to get it out of the water column a bit faster. look at walmart in the craft section, look at the stuffing material they use on pillows. Its cheaper since it isnt labeled aquarium use.

You need to rinse it until the water runs clear and when you place it in the system it need to be in lower flows because high flow will break the carbon up.

If you have livestock you should probably do a big waterchange pretty quick and run some floss for the next few days.

i think they call it poly-fil. let me see if I can find a link real quick. I rinse mine in ro/di then slap it in the sump.

i couldnt find a link to the exact package i use, but here is a similar one. its not a flat pad but a bundle of cotton like material. I just cut out how much i need and add it to the sump. I usually do this for water changes to catch the stuff I stir up during a change.

    hope this helps
