Can I take LR out of tank?

Ok, took the plunge and all done...for now. Took about 1.5 hours, I did put about 5" of tank water in a tub to keep stuff moist. I was able to leave the four biggest pieces in the whole time so thats good.

When I fired the skimmer up it TOOK OFF and overflowed really quick. It has since filled another 1/2 cup already. This is from stirring so much up and my arms being in the water is all I can think???

I did scrub my arms down with tap water (no soap) before hand, is that proper procedure?

Thanks for the votes of confidence everyone! I have a tendency to over think things and get paralyzed unless I know the outcome will be good...not a good trait in aqua-world!
