You CAN, BUT that's not too ideal way to do it...

Double your water changes schedule instead until you get proper nitrate levels.

    Then,
Then look at getting something like the CPR AquaFuge hang on refugium for your Chaeto.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
You have to ball it up so it does not float around the tank and secure it behind the rock work or put it in a container.

It must have good flow and adequate lighting or else it will grow algae and die off.

What lighting do you have on your tank? If it is 10k or 14k the Chaeto will have trouble growing.

I've tried this in hopes of lowering nitrates. And it failed. The cheato grew a bit but nitrates remained the same. I have a feeling you'll need much more than a hand full placed in a media bag. Which is exactly what I have in my tank. But not for nitrate, just for a little pod sanctuary of sorts. So far this has worked. There are tons of pods, the dragonette is happy and is constantly hovering around the little bag I have stuffed in the back corner. Someone posted more water changes. +1 to that. I've also had good luck with carbon dosing. But I don't know what long term effects result from that.
