Camera settings

    Those are awesome pictures.

    Yes parallel to the glass is an absolute must. I have a bowfront tank so it gets tricky at times. My macro lens is much more prone to distortion than my others if I'm not absolutely parallel. Stopping down the lens helps alleviate distortion.

    some of my Fav pics of my tank where taken before I bought my DSLR. So that being said I'd have to say a DSL is not 100% required to get Great tank shots.
    As ReefSparky said "Volume" is key. Even with my 50D I still take 10 shots and only like 1.
    If colour is an issue try tuning off your actinics so that the camera only has 1 colour temperature to deal with. This will also make white balance a lot easier.

    That was taken with a 6MP Fuji point and shoot 2 years ago. So don't think you can't get good shots without a DSLR :)
