Will this work for reef type set up? I will have to wait on the skimmer for awhile but though this would help reduce my nitrates.

From what I've read, bio balls are not necessary in a reef setup. If your goal is to reduce nitrates, simply remove the bio balls at the intake and increase the width of your fuge. Bio balls can be used if you want them, simply place them after the skimmer so most of the DOCs are gone, this will reduce nitrate production.

As far as overflows, go to aquacrylics.com. Awesome stuff and cheap. I have one, works great. You could always place the carbon in one of the baffles where it would have a lot of water flow through it.
