    Matrix is simply a pourous material for bacteria to grow on. If you have lr it is unnecessary. Changing it could cause a mini cycle so I would either use it or not use it. ( I would not as it is redundant in most systems). You cannot stockpile bacteria.

    If you're using matrix it doesn't need to be changed, it's basically live rock. It doesn't dissolve either. It's a one and done type deal. I personally like the idea of more biological filtration in this way, but yes it is redundant in most systems.

    If you do bio pellets, they need to be topped off every so often. They dissolve with time. Depending on your bioload it can go 1-3 months before needing to be topped off again. If you run bio pellets make sure to have the output as close to the intake of the skimmer as possible.
