I have used both and for me the swirling for 15 seconds sounds like not that big a deal but it is very important not to shake the test tube. The less swirling the better and the Salifert is the only one I use now.
Red Sea-90 seconds of swirling.(assuming you only swirl 5 secs after reagent b)
Salifert-40 seconds of swirling.Faster overall and less chance of inaccuracy..:)
    My targets are:
    Alk.8-10 stable
    calcium 450
    magnesium 1350

That makes more sense :) I have to test Mag in the next day or two (using Red Sea). I may do 2 back to back, one with swirling, and one with shaking and see what the difference is. Although when I do the test, I do not cap the test tube between adding drops, so shaking is not an option anyways ;)

What type of salt are you using? how old is the tank?

Not to sound blunt or harsh - why not just get a high quality salt mix and do a bigger water change once a week. It would help balance and be far cheaper. once you stabilize than dose if needed.

lmk if that's crazy logic ;D
