Alright fellow reefers, I am going to be constructing one of these some time soon, as well as making my own pvc overflow for it. The question I have is can I use the container the water will be in as a sump/refugium and with the turf scrubber working will I even need the canister filter anymore?

I'm not sure I'm following your question. What do you mean by "the container"?

I think he's talking about a hob skimmer that has a compartment.

I guess basically it will be a sump, I am going to put a 10-15 gal roughneck tote down under the tank.

@Mikeyb you question seems to be related to your other thread (I briefly skimmed it)...I guess the quick answer to your OP question is yes you can, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should...more information is needed:

    Tank size?
    new tank or old?
    what is current filtration?
    nitrate level?
    Phosphate level?
    Tank algae?
    How much do you feed?

    That's a start...

Also, JMO but I'm not a big fan of rubbermaid totes as sumps. IMO better to wait for a Petco $1/gal sale and get something that fits

    Tank size: 80 gallon
    Running since 1st of Feb
    nitrate 40ppm
phosphate not sure don't have the test kit
Algae I wipe down a slight film once or twice weekly.
I feed twice daily but my roomate feeds more often since she believes the fish are hungry, I have tried to tell her many time please don't feed them.
