Ahhhh, I have some in the 20g reef. Def. a type of algae. Heard it's not common in the trade, but I might be wrong. That thing looks like it might be calcearous.

Spindle-weed, caterpillar-weed, etc. are common names for neomeris annulata. neomeris annulata - Google Image Search

It's rarely a problem in aquaria.

I had it in my 240... never became a problem, and I actually think it looks kinda cool IMO. As long as it doesn't go crazy on ya, I don't think its hurtin' anything. Inwall, do you know.... do they feed on photosynthesis or phosphates and nitrates?

I've had the stuff too and it never lasts very long. It's a calcerous type of algae if I'm not mistaken.

It feeds via photosynthesis, phosphorus, nitrates, and uptakes Calcium and carbonates as well. Like I mentioned, it's rarely a problem.

However, should you decide to dose Calcium and Alkalinity based on a "recipe" or dosing schedule rather than testing, it can become an issue. This is someone's tank in my local reef club. (I won't give his name because he's quite frustrated for obvious reasons).
