the more heads the mother colony has, the more heads will be created. also if you feed them often they will grow faster

I'm currently feeding with phytomax due to my clams. Would that work for the acans?

+1 My hermits like to steal the meat off of them so I throw in some pellets before feeding the acans.

Just to directly answer your question about phyto. Phyto will not directly feed most coral, it can feed some of the zooplankton that may be living in your tank which the coral may then eat but I wouldn't count on it necessarily. I agree about feeding meaty foods, mysis etc.
Also there's a great sticky in this forum (the Coral forum) about feeding coral, has lots of great information about feeding coral.

Due to the fish in my reef tank I feed brine or mysis everyday. The phyto is for my clams, without the phyto the clams will not grow, and from what I've heard die.
