API ammonia liquid kit. and strips for nitrite and nitrate. I know not the most accurate but they do work.

Do whatever you want, but if your tests are inaccurate, you don't really know what you are dealing with.

I would just wait.....rather than add something else (filter) into the mix - that's my .02

OK. I just put my flame retardant suit on..... and I'm ready
On Saturday, my kids begged me to grab a couple hermit crabs and snails out of our creek. I Put 2 of each in the tank and they have been alive and well since Saturday.
Fire up the flamethrowers and let me have it

We're not here to "let you have it". Just giving advice. Patience is about the best advice I can give at your certain stage of your tank.

There is no need to add any other sources into your system at this time, especially when you have inhabitants in it now. The tank is already seeded so no need for any additional.

These guys will tell you how survivable your tank is at this stage. Just watch how they do. If one dies you will want to remove it asap because it could still throw you an ammonia spike and kill the others.

API and the strips are not the best for accuracy, especially if you are having low levels of ammonia nitrite and nitrate. If you are not planning on getting better tests for those, see if your LFS will test your water for you. With the snails and crabs living this long, your test methods may just be off.

Thanks. I did put the filter pad in the sump today. Also I really wasn't sure the little crabs and snails would have made it this long. I warned the kids but I am amazed they are still running around trying scavenging. I'm worried they will not have enough to eat now
