They could send it to space, but what happens in the next 60 years (which was how long ago the ocean dumping began) and the folks in the US space village, say, "what is that nuclear crap doing floating around space? I cannot believe those idiots didn't think what they were doing when they dumped that stuff up here!;)"

Garbage dumping restrictions in U.S. waters

Under federal law, it is illegal for any vessel to discharge plastics or garbage containing plastics into any waters. Additional restrictions on dumping non-plastic waste are outlined below. Regional, state or local laws may place further restrictions on the disposal of garbage. ALL discharge of garbage is prohibited in the Great Lakes or their connecting or tributary waters. Each knowing violation of these requirements may result in a fine of up to $500,000 and 6 years imprisonment.

In: Lakes, rivers, bays, sounds and up to 3 miles offshore it is illegal to dump

    All garbage
From 3 to 12 nautical miles offshore it is illegal to dump:

    Plastic
Dunnage, lining and packing materials that float
All other trash if not ground to less that 1"
From 12 to 25 nautical miles offshore it is illegal to dump:

    Plastic
Dunnage, lining and packing materials that float
Outside 25 nautical miles offshore it is illegal to dump:

    Plastic

California has different laws on this one, the EPA grants exceptions for states to do this. We have no disharge zones and require a further off shore dumping.

FWIW, one of our presidents pushed our boundries to 250 nautical miles, so in effect, we controll out to 250 nautical miles of our coastline.

If you think that is bad, how much waste do you think Russia has dumped in the oceans? Better double those numbers.

The chemical waste from 30 years ago doesn't bother me (relatively speaking) that much. Time, dilution and bacteria will eventually break it down. It's the nucular waste that will still be there for the next 10,000+ years. :(

The USSR doesn't need to dump nuclear stuff, they just scuttle the ship with it on it, and call it an accident :D
