Then why not put them side by side, each with it's own 30 gallon sump?

huh?????? How can doubling the water volume of your system be too much??? That will make for a healthier more stable system to say the least. If it were me I'd go for it.

I say do it. I have a 10g refug in my 75g tank that is holding about 55g of water. So 65g on my 90g display. The extra water volume is so nice. No problems here. Not sure, but putting big fish in the sump defeats the purpose. So is it one 55 with a 55 sump or two 55s with 30 sump?

Whats the disadvantage of having a sump/fuge that is the same or bigger than your display? My tank is a 40g and my DIY sump is a 45g rubbermaid tub. The tank has been doing really well, so I don't see whats wrong with that.
