    Kevin, I am in the process of building a stand for my 40 breeder. I am undecided if I want to paint it or stain it. I known staining can be very difficult sometimes. If you were to do your stand again would you still stain it or would you paint?

    If you would have asked me last week, I would have said painted. After clear coating it with gloss several times, I am very pleased. If you want to stain, use red oak. I really liked the gel stain too.

    If you want to work with a cheaper wood like pine, I would paint it. Pine doesn't seem to stain well.

    Another option is to use a nice oak skin and just clearcoat it, I love the look of my stand its raw oak with a clearcoat
