DSC I was told to take them out to help with nitrates?(I believe that is what I was told) is this correct I've been getting guidance from a LFS and when I first purchased my tank plans were to be fish only shortly after I changed my mind and the owner of the LFS told me to remove my media and use my live rock and skimmer to filter the water so far everything has gone smooth and they seem very knowledgeable and fair

Can't have to much bio filtration. It's not gonna hurt without them but they do work from first hand experience

I would have drilled my tank if i could go back. I do have an eshopps overflow that works fine but my next tank will be drilled or i will drill it myself.

So i am guessing drilling is out of the question now. An overflow box is probably your best bet.

after that you would need a sump, a good way to save money here is you use a regular tank and put your own baffles in it. plan out your sump and do research if you plan on going this route.

You would then need a return pump and plumbing.

I just had a comment that your pictures do look like coralline growing - it's hard to be sure because of the lighting. I will let others give you sump information (sump impaired here - although I have one lol).

My sump is located about 6 feet below and 40 feet to the left. I found space for it. Some people have used closets behind the tank.

well what was supposed to be a good day turned out horrible I am picking up and installing my Hydor ATO after work today along with a few mods to my emperor filter to help stop micro bubbles woke up this morning and found my swallow tail had died overnight. A few weeks ago he was acting strange not eating and such but for the last week hes been his normal self not sure what happened but sure do feel bad... and to top it off beginning to see some red slime when it rains it pours
