Good question, I read an article that stated that manufacturers build tanks so that can be placed inside of each other and just rounded the gallons to the nearest 10 gallon increment many years ago so it has become an industry standard.

Rectangle is 24x12x20. the distance to the peak of the bow is 2.9.

29 gallons on the button based off of that (26.065 if those measurements were outside to outside and if he has 1/4" glass).

Those are outside dimensions and the galls is 1/4" think approximately.

Yup, I checked mine shortly after I got and confirmed it was close. I just used triangle to approximate the bow section knowing it would be less, but not significantly so.

Some are crazy off like a 40B they hold almost 45 gallon from the internal measurements.

    True.

Use [(22/7)(1/2A)(B)]/2 to get the area of your semi-elipse and then multiply it by the height (A is length of the tank and B is the distance to the peak of the elipse from the end of the rectangular point closest to the peak). Add that to the volume of the rectangular portion of the tank and you have your volume in cubic inches. Convert that to gallons.

If you want an even more exact volume, take a 1/4" off each side of your measurements to compensate for the glass.
