    I am going with the removable background. I local shop cuts acrylic. They can cut it to my specs and it comes already stained in black. I plan to make three panels (2) small and (1) bigger to slide in and out. It is important that it can be removed so I can do maintenence.

    that sounds like a great idea for your tank. especially since you have the access to the back of it.

    How long have you had the Engineer Goby? Does he stay in one burrow or is he constantly making new ones? He does not compromise water clarity?

    I bought it 2/23/12 (had to look at my 55 gallon thread to confirm). He's got burrows all over. He does not compromise clarity. Here's a pic of when I got it.

    I kept two engineer gobies over my 15 or so years and they were soooo cool! Loved them! They also were sooo hardy....one along with a striped damsel were my only lone survivors after our Midwest hurricane a few years back and we lost power for 6 days :(
